Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra
While working on his PhD dissertation (Translating Evaluative Discourse), Dr. Ranganathan was asked to teach yoga philosophy to yoga students. He tried to find a translation that was actually a translation and not a mere projection of what the translator believed. He could not find one, so he translated Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra. It was (and is) the only translation of the Yoga Sūtra informed by advanced research in Translation Studies, a general approach to translation that takes into account the specific requirements of specific genres of texts, and the general project of determining the content of a text without projecting one’s beliefs on to it.
Peer reviewed.
“Shyam Ranganathan has done a conscientious job translating (and unpacking) these dense, lapidary statements about the yogi’s journey to Samadhi... He is also careful to help us avoid the dangers of easy equivalences between Western philosophical terms and Indian ones…. Ranganathan’s commentary throughout is clear without being simplistic. It illuminates without dumbing things down. … The Penguin Classics volume is an excellent place to start one’s journey into this tradition.”
